Ballmer Still Doesn’t See Google Enterprise Threat

As a Computerworld article makes abundantly clear, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer still doesn’t perceive a serious enterprise threat from Google, despite the latter’s increasingly clear intention to carve out at least an SME niche for Google Office-type application and services.

Says Ballmer:

Most people, for the foreseeable future, are still going to want to run enterprise IT as enterprise IT.

That’s probably true, but Microsoft shouldn’t underestimate any threat to its Office franchise, especially a distinctively disruptive one coming from a well-fortified competitor.

Besides, as the rest of the article makes clear, Microsoft’s software-licensing complexity and "bloatware" are liabilities — and targets of customer disaffection — that could open the door to a competitive incursion.
